COOTHARINGA CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF ABILITY FIRST! - Townsville Bulletin 11 April 2011

One of North Queensland's most loved charities celebrated 60 years at the weekend and with a motto like "Ability First" there's plenty more where that came from.

More than 200 clients, volunteers and past employees attended the Cootharinga North Queensland's 60th anniversary celebration at Jupiters on Saturday!

They included a determined band of 40 volunteers from Babinda who raised an impressive $110,000 for the disability assistance organisation through their second hand store and were rewarded with a night of luxury at the Casino.

Marketing and Public Relations Manager, Mandy MacDonald said guests enjoyed a High Tea celebration, the highlight of which was a Powerpoint presentation of photos through the years. "There were a lot of clients who were able to see themselves when they were younger and reflect on the things they have been able to achieve over the years," she said.  "The Mayor Les Tyrell said some lovely words about the contribution of Cootharinga which started off as the North Queensland Society for Crippled Children" .  We had the cake cutting and everyone had a terrific time"

Ms MacDonald said the consensus was Cootharinga could go strong for another 60 years, particularly if important initiatives like the National Insurance Scheme was implemented.  The scheme would mean every australian living with a disability would have  a chance to access medical care, education and respite.  "We want to get the message out that we strongly support the NDIS and hope the community gets behind it as well," Ms MacDonald said.
