Cootharinga Celebrates 60 Years
10 March 2011
This year Cootharinga celebrates its 60th anniversary. It is a time to celebrate the forging of many individuals whose dedication and team spirit have strengthened the community…one that includes active participation from people living with a disability and furthering Cootharinga’s vision of “Building a better world with people of all abilities.”
Cootharinga’s original commitment came out of the Polio myelitis epidemic in the 1950’s in North QLD. At this time, a caring and committed group of business people and civic leaders (citizens) started a chain reaction which would help to change the world for people living with disabilities.
Through many creative endeavours and sheer determination, including the Babinda Bargain Centre and involvement in the then Miss Australia Quest, enough funds were raised, to build the Cootharinga Children’s Nursing Home in Northward which supported, cared for and educated young children suffering Polio Myelitis.
Today Cootharinga continues to provide quality services to over 650 people across North Queensland. Cootharinga’s Children’s Nursing Home has since closed down, being replaced with purpose built homes sprinkled throughout the community. People are supported through accommodation and therapy services and wheel chair and mobility equipment is built, adjusted and customized in our Rehabilitation Technology Service.
In the past few years, two new services have been added, which includes the opening of Cootharinga’s Activity and Respite Centre and our new Early Intervention Services for Children 0 - 18 with Autism. If you have had a past connection with Cootharinga, we would like to hear from you. Don't hesitate to contact us.
